Gettysburg: silence and respect

Lincoln Highway Road Trip, day 4.

After I arrived in Gettysburg yesterday there was still time for a walk in the fading light around the Gettysburg National Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 3,500 Union soldiers killed in the Battle of Gettysburg, on the site of one of the battlefields.

The one picture is the area where the unknown soldiers lie. Behind the artillery piece you see WWII graves (there are over 3000 post-Civil War graves). Silence and respect.

The Lincoln monument was actually meant to honor the speech (and the words are set out to the left and right of Lincoln) – not far from this spot on the day the cemetery was dedicated on November 19, 1863, Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address – but it serves to honor both the speech and the man.

Off to the Gettysburg battlefields soon and hoping to get there before today’s thunderstorms.
