Lincoln Highway Road Trip, day 4, end of a fantastic day. I love road trips.
I woke up this morning in Gettysburg and got myself out to the battlefields fairly early: the weather report said thunderstorms at noon. The weather report was correct. It was an interesting and informative tour of the site. Little Round Top, the ridge where Pickett’s Charge was begun…so many other stops…all of these were for me just place names until today. I must say, however, that the sheer volume of battle monuments, plaques and statues got to be a little overwhelming. According to my informal survey the South may have lost the battle (and the war) but Dixie sure rose up again and won the monuments and statues competition. Definitely worth a visit despite the volume of tourists – the site is big enough that there is room for everyone. Oh, an honorable mention to the Blue & Gray Bar & Grill, Gettysburg, for a fine venue to watch the Warriors the night before. Dubs!
The skies opened at noon. Buckets and buckets and buckets of rain for most of the afternoon. Good that the TT has Quattro (all wheel drive) – I needed it. Thankfully it stopped by late afternoon, and it did not rain nonstop – good thing because it was a lovely drive with many photo opps. They take the Lincoln Highway pretty seriously in this part of Pennsylvania with lots of wall murals and excellent signage.
As I headed west it got more and more rural and remote. I hit a couple of real throwback towns along the way. In the photos, you see one of the road markers on this part of the Lincoln Highway; Everett PA (which was like going back in time); two from Bedford PA (also a time travel experience – check out the surviving deco Gulf station); and an example of what one sees on the occasional roadside building.
I am about 1 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh at a motel along the road (a classic and in decent condition) and have that city as tomorrow’s destination. More pix from the road in the morning. I am beat.
