Crossing Arizona on Route 66.
After Williams AZ (heading west) first a stop in little Ash Fork – the Flagstone Capital of the World — which has a ghost town feel to it. Time is not being too kind to it; this is yet another one of those towns on life support now that the interstate bypassed it. There are several big flagstone yards there (and not much else).
One of those must-see stops on Route 66 in Arizona is Seligman. The Roadkill Cafe and much more.
As we head west the landscape becomes increasingly desolate; the stops are fewer. Off I-40 the towns are mostly small and quiet.
The pix at the end of the set were taken in Truxton and Hackberry, two very sleepy roadside stops on another great stretch of Route 66 away from the interstate.
The Hackberry General Store is one of those “wow” stops for photographers with a truly impressive collection of cars rusting away in the desert. Does it get better than that?
