Stockton, part two (the nice bits)

On the 1913 route. Historic Stockton.

Now, as my English friends would say, the nice bits. There are indeed good parts of this city and signs of renewal.

The Fox Theater (1930) is a notable survivor in the downtown (it has been renamed the Bob Hope).

The former Stockton Hotel (1910) was the leading hotel in Stockton in the Lincoln Highway era; the building – a mission revival beauty – lives on, although it ceased hotel operations in 1960.

There are many handsome civic buildings.

The Southern Pacific train depot (1930) has been saved and renovated; it’s one of two Amtrak stations in Stockton, and the regional ACE trains stop there, too .

The University of the Pacific campus on the way north to Lodi was a welcome sight to be sure. A handsome and historic campus.  It’s the oldest chartered university in California.  The Stockton Empire Theater (1945) is on Pacific Avenue’s “Miracle Mile” near UOP – I didn’t quite see what was so miraculous out there, but it is in what seems to be like a healthy business district with shops and cafes.
