After Altamont we continue on the 1913 route and pass through Mountain House (and by yet more housing developments under construction) and get to Tracy and then Banta.
The Grand Theater in Tracy is a beauty (1923, remodeled 1939 – 1941).
That’s my server at the Banta Inn where I paused for lunch. Culturally, I sensed I was no longer in the SF Bay Area when I stopped off there.
Next, Mossdale; that’s not just any old railroad crossing point. This is Mossdale Crossing at the San Joaquin River near Lathrop: the site of the Mossdale Bridge, opened on September 8, 1869, which is considered to be the true last link in the transcontinental railroad.
We get as far as a marker in Lathrop commemorating the Lincoln Highway and a family business on the Lincoln called Wiggin’s Trading Post that once occupied the site.
