Arriving in Oakland.
Navigating the original 1913 route of the Lincoln Highway one left on the Broadway Ferry from the Ferry Slips at the south end of the Ferry Building in San Francisco, crossed the bay and after entering the Oakland Inner Harbor arrived at a ferry pier on the Oakland Estuary at the foot of Broadway at what is now Jack London Square in Oakland (in the first photo in this set one sees a seating area by the water which as I understand it was the site of the pier).
A lot of these shots were taken at Jack London Square. That’s the actual cabin (relocated from the Klondike) Jack London lived in. Also pictured is President Roosevelt’s Presidential Yacht (1934) which served as Roosevelt’s yacht from 1936 until his death in 1945; it is open to visitors but mind the restricted times for touring it. In the last two photos one sees the homeless encampments by the freeway near Jack London Square and the port. I have been gone for a few years now, and I don’t recall seeing that before in Oakland; apparently, it is something that has become a serious problem in recent years in Oakland as well. In this set one also sees the former Western Pacific Depot (also called the Western Pacific Railroad Depot or the 3rd Street Station), built by the WP and used from 1910 to 1970.
As for those clear, cloudless California skies: it makes photography very difficult!
