1913 route in San Francisco, part five. Art deco!
There is a wealth of art deco architecture in San Francisco on or near the Lincoln Highway’s route along Market through the downtown to Mid-Market.
The scary looking eagle is on the exterior of the streamline moderne old main Post Office at Rincon Center (1940) at the entrance on Mission Street, between Spear and Steuart Streets.
The stunning Shell Oil Company Building (1929) is located at 100 Bush Street. Shell vacated the building during the 1960s to relocate to Houston. This one is a real gem (and a personal favorite) and has been beautifully restored.
The Stock Exchange Tower located at 155 Sansome Street (Timothy Pflueger, 1930); also in the set is Pflueger’s “Neo-Mayan” 450 Sutter Street Medical Building (1929). The statues at the former Pacific Stock Exchange date back to 1932.
The last four are of 140 New Montgomery Street (formerly The Pacific Telephone Building, 1925), San Francisco’s first true skyscraper.
