Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona

This post will take us from the trading posts at the New Mexico state line to Williams.

My first real stop (after the amazing Petrified Forest National Park) was Holbrook. Wigwam Village Motel – sleep in a concrete teepee! I didn’t; I opted for the Mission Revival classic La Posada Hotel in Winslow, another Mary Colter hotel (1930) – some say it is her masterpiece. Highly recommended!

I stood on the corner in Winslow Arizona! I also had breakfast on the corner, too; meet the team at the Sipp Shoppe. Great food and great conversation there.

The church in this set is in Flagstaff which was another enjoyable stop with a fine surviving downtown. It’s a college town – Northern Arizona University is there. The two pictures of the church in this set are of the lovely Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary church (also 1930). Art deco gothic. Love it. That craftsman beauty in this set is the Riordan Mansion (1904), a log mansion constructed by local timber barons. It was designed by Charles Whittlesey – he was also the architect for the El Tovar hotel in Grand Canyon Village.

Finally, after way to much interstate at Flagstaff I was able to take a fine surviving stretch of original Route 66.

The last photos are of Williams, another roadside classic. The Grand Canyon trains leave from there.
