Route 66 in Missouri: the old motels and hotels. Some are lovingly restored; some are a little worse for wear; some are pretty down-and-out; and then there the ones that are truly out-and-out.
In this set you can see some ruins of old motor court cabins along more remote parts of the drive away from the interstate. When the interstate opened and these motels away from the interstate were bypassed, it was the final act for a lot of them. Curtains.
At the Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon MO, I parked and went in the office to see if there were any postcards for sale. I had a nice chat with Bob. He is a retiree and friend of the owners. He helps out at the desk. They’ve done a good job restoring it. So have the owners of the Wagon Wheel in Cuba.
The Art Deco Streamline Moderne Boots Motel, in Carthage MO opened in 1939. My favorite.
