The Lincoln Highway’s original 1913 route left Hayward on A Street and then ran along what is now I-580 to the Tri-Valley area (i.e. Amador Valley, Livermore Valley and San Ramon Valley) passing through Dublin Canyon on the way.
Much of the original route is gone, but there is a pretty surviving stretch of the old highway along Palo Verde Road just outside the Castro Valley city limits. At the intersection of Palo Verde and Palomares is the landmark Spark Stoves Barn.
The cemetery photos in this set were taken in the Dublin Heritage Park and Museums. There, too, one sees new home construction (which continues as one follow the old Lincoln route toward Tracy – see this post).
Pleasanton is a side trip; it is not on the Lincoln Highway route but close by. It’s, well, a pleasant stop. In one of the pictures is a Pleasanton institution, the Meadowlark Dairy. It’s across the street from the old Pleasanton train station building (built in 1895 by Southern Pacific as a replacement of an earlier Central Pacific station). The Pleasanton Arch was dedicated in 1932.
The final two photos as we drive toward Livermore were taken at the Santa Rita county jail complex. Good thing I didn’t see that photography restriction on the sign in the very last pic until after I got the one before it…
