Newark, part three

Newark, part three.

Finally, here is a grouping of pictures taken near or right along the Lincoln Highway route in a part of town I probably didn’t belong in but I was seeking out the surviving Jewish deli, Hobbys.

The riots were in 1967 and it seems like time has stood still in parts of Newark since then. There are some really nice parts of Newark with encouraging signs of revitalization and renewal but still some really ravaged looking areas. Lots of police, many still abandoned buildings, old signage…the theater marquee with the peeling paint is of Newark’s once grand movie palace, the Newark Paramount Theatre (closed in 1986 and abandoned and supposedly crumbling inside).

I have to say I was wholly unprepared for what I saw in parts of Newark. This is not a place a lot of us get to, despite its proximity to Manhattan.

People say it is on the way back but it has a ways to go…
